tattoo care

How you care for your tattoo will have a major impact on how it heals! :)

If you have ANY questions during your healing process, you can contact me any time at stephanieblaketattoos@gmail.com

Traditional Bandage:

Leave your bandage on for 2-4 hours. Make sure you’re in a clean setting + have thoroughly washed your hands before removing.

Used a mild, unscented soap + gently wash your tattoo, removing any excess blood, ink, ointment + plasma by rubbing softly in a circular motion.

Rinse + repeat until your skin is completely clean.

Gently pat dry, a single use paper towel is best, then allow the tattoo to air dry for a few minutes. Keep clean by washing the area at least once a day.

When your tattoo starts to scab over, in about 1 to 2 days, apply a pea-sized amount of any of the following: A&D ointment, Aquaphor or coconut oil. I personally prefer coconut oil, but everyone’s skin is different. Use what you know works best for you. Make sure it’s a thin layer, if clothing or bed sheets stick to the tattoo, you’ve applied too much.

Saniderm Bandage:

Leave bandage on for at least 24 hours. If you notice it starting to pool underneath or leak out, it’s best to take the bandage off then, wash the area with a mild soap + let it dry. You’re welcome to put on another bandage if you have your own Saniderm or similar bandage, but make sure the area is thoroughly clean + dry before putting on another bandage. Some people might have a reaction to the adhesive, which makes the skin around the tattoo red, itchy + flaky/dry. Take off the bandage if you start to notice this.

Wash your tattoo at least once a day + apply moisturizer to help with flaking + itching. Try not to scratch or pick at your tattoo. This can cause ink fall-out which might require a touch-up later on.

Wearing loose fitting clothing for the first few days is recommended. Also, be mindful of the first night with your tattoo + make sure to have fresh, clean bed sheets. Keeping direct exposure to pets to a minimum for at least the first few days is best as well.

It takes about a month for your tattoo to fully heal. Everyone heals differently, so time may vary from person to person. Wait at least 3 weeks before any kind of swimming, soaking or sun exposure. Once you are in the sun for long periods of time, applying + reapplying sunscreen throughout the time you are outside will help protect your tattoo. :)

You should refrain from any kind of intense exercise for a least a week as well, or until the tattoo starts to form a scab. Avoid shaving the area until the scab has completely fallen off.

I always love to see healed photos of your tattoos! It helps me learn + grow in my craft. If your tattoo needs some extra love after it’s completely healed, at least one month after, I offer free touch-ups for a full year! Please don’t hesitate to reach out, I want to make sure your tattoo looks it’s best. ♡
